Background of the Study
Peer mentoring has been proven to enhance students’ academic and personal development by encouraging collaborative learning and providing emotional support through relationships with older or more experienced peers. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, there is a lack of a formalized platform to facilitate peer mentoring among secondary school students, which limits the potential benefits of peer support in education. While some schools attempt to implement peer mentoring informally, the absence of a dedicated platform often leads to inconsistent participation and ineffective connections.
By integrating social media into a Student Peer Mentoring System, students will have access to a flexible and accessible platform where they can connect with their mentors, share study resources, discuss academic challenges, and provide emotional support. The use of social media platforms, such as WhatsApp or Facebook, will allow students to engage with their peers in real-time, regardless of location, making the mentoring process more seamless and interactive. This system would be developed using a web-based platform combined with mobile applications, and would incorporate features such as messaging, resource sharing, event management, and mentoring tracking. The system will be built using technologies such as React for front-end development, Node.js for the back-end, and Firebase for real-time communication and database management.
Statement of the Problem
Secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area lack an effective, organized platform for peer mentoring among students. Without such a system, students miss out on opportunities to receive guidance, support, and academic advice from their more experienced peers. The lack of structure in informal peer mentoring programs also limits the ability of students to connect with mentors and make the most of peer learning opportunities.
